Fitting a New Hardscape to a Mature, Existing Landscape.

Hand digging is the key….

Hand digging is the key….

Hardscape solutions sometimes look raw and imposed upon the landscape. The viewer may say, “it will settle in,” and, of course, with time enough, it eventually does. Concord Stoneworks of Concord, Massachusetts strives to make new work “fit” the landscape as quickly as possible. In this case, they were hired to replace a bluestone walkway and set of steps that had become unsafe and unsound. The owner’s intent was to replace the steps with granite while keeping the paving in bluestone. Some of the bluestone turned out to be salvageable, which allowed the project to recover some additional “patina”. The key was to hand dig the site, disturbing adjacent elements such as the lawn, plantings and the remains of an existing historic stone wall as little as possible. By working gently and thoughtfully, they produced a result that looks like it has been there for decades.
